Uncensored New York was founded in 2021 by Samantha Sutcliffe and Johnny Scuotto as an artist-run movement dedicated to protecting artistic freedom and resisting censorship through collective creative practice. Our educational resources and public programming create new pathways for artistic recognition and engagement outside of institutional systems, centering the experiences of those without formal arts education.
Over the last four years we have facilitated collaborative projects and supported the development of new work across visual art, sound, film, performance, and theory. Additionally we have a record label for digital and physical releases.
In 2024 we created an education program to support critical expression prioritizing experimentation, autonomy and the urgent need for artists to speak freely in a climate of increasing socio-political pressure. Our programming encompasses studio seminar classes, project development workshops, lectures and public performances.
Our lectures are distributed via Profane Realm // Reino Profano, a Usb exchange inspired by alternative distribution methods that counter censorship and assimilation across the Americas. Documenting our history and expanding public access through exhibitions and programming strengthens a growing network of creative expression, offering tools, visibility, and support to artists often left out of the mainstream art world.
Uncensored New York is part of the Brujas World Syndicate and the recipient of Creatives Rebuild New York and The City Artist Corps Grant.
